Halifax FC Women have been knocked out of the FAWNL Cup after losing out to a strong Hashtag United side in tricky conditions on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles’ record run in the FAWNL Cup has come to an end. On Sunday, high-flying Hashtag United made the lengthy journey up to West Yorkshire with an impressive following with the hope of reaching the FAWNL Cup final.
Hashtag scored first with a very early goal from Samantha Rowland after a ball from Emma Samways was cut back, with Rowland finishing calmly in a clinical move. The goal was scored in only the second minute of the game, 0-1. Not the start that Halifax will have wanted.
Halifax didn’t let the goal bring them down, as they looked to create chances in search for an equaliser. A chance from Sowerby could only find the keeper and a promising free kick from Katie Ramsden was close, but could not find the back of the net.
Hashtag United had chances of their own in the first half, but some strong and resolute defending from Halifax kept them at bay. An impressive performance from Becky Flaherty in goal also kept them out on multiple occasions.
Half time: Halifax FC Women 0 – 1 Hashtag United FC Women.
The second half started with both teams creating chances, a balanced start to the half, with Darcie Greene fighting her way through to find the equaliser, but the Hashtag keeper was one step ahead.
Hashtag scored their second goal on the 57 minute mark, it was Samantha Rowland again, adding a second goal for the visitors, a huge goal to put the game slightly out of reach for the Eagles.
Once again, Halifax tried to answer back with a goal and came close through Georgia Stevens on her return from a lengthy spell away from the team with injury. A shot from Stevens from outside the box narrowly missed the target. Halifax kept pushing, but the Hashtag defenders were resolute on multiple occasions, they made it difficult for Halifax.

“We’ve got to go again and regroup. We’re out and there’s nothing we can do about it.”
Lauryn Wilcock also spoke about the game:
“I thought we defended well as a team, I’m obviously gutted because we were so close to the final but we’ve got a lot to be proud of.”
