Halifax FC women secured a 1-5 victory against Rotherham United Women FC in a friendly-match despite a limited squad of just 12 players. The team showed a dominating performance, led by an impressive hat trick from Minnie Wilson.
Even with a couple of players missing due to international duties and injuries, Halifax started confidently. In the 8th minute, Minnie Wilson scored from a corner kick putting Halifax to an early lead. However, Rotherham responded within the next 10 minutes as the goalkeeper failed to clear the ball and left the goal open for the equalizer.
The 27th minute saw Kayleigh Bamforth score an incredible long ranger goal, surprising everyone and putting the Eagles back in the lead and holding the game 1-2 till the half time.
Just five minutes in the second half, Wilson took advantage of a mistake by the goalkeeper to score her second goal extending their lead. She continued to cause trouble to the home team, winning a penalty after being fouled inside the box in the 59th minute. Meg Cardenas took the penalty, although the goalkeeper got her hand to it, the ball found its way into the net.
Rotherham tried hard to fight back, creating several close chances and dangerous corners, but the visitors interference in each attempt prevented them from making any changes to the scorecard. The 84th minute marked Wilson’s hat trick as she scored a good distance goal, to bring the score to 1-5.
This win was an excellent opportunity for Halifax’s younger players to show their talent. The confidence they gained from this match would hopefully help them to improve as they prepare for the future league games.
