Halifax FC Women face FC United of Manchester on Sunday afternoon, in the FAWNL Cup determining round. The fixture is The Eagles’ first of the 2023/2024 season, and is set to be a momentous occasion as the side make their competitive debut as ‘Halifax FC Women’ following this summer’s rebrand.

Kick-off at the Broadhurst Park Stadium is at 2pm as FAWNL Cup action returns with a full programme of fixtures involving teams from across the FAWNL.

Halifax have enjoyed a positive pre-season, with some assured performances and encouraging results, including a solid 3-0 win away against Salford in very rainy conditions. The Eagles impressed with good attacking play while also minimising the chances that Salford had. They will look to carry this quality into the game on Sunday.

Rob Mitchell’s side are looking to kick start their season with a win, albeit a week later than anticipated following the postponement of last week’s league opener against Newcastle United.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s game, Mitchell said:

“I’m excited to get the season started. I really hope we can put on a good performance.”

A win on Sunday for Halifax would be valuable at such an early point of the season, and the opportunity to carry the positive momentum into their first league game against newly promoted Stourbridge would be hugely beneficial.

FC United of Manchester welcome Halifax on the back of a morale dampening 1-7 loss against Doncaster Rovers Belles in their last league match, but will be looking for an improvement in form on Sunday and a reversal of this result. Despite being in a lower division than The Eagles, FC United will certainly be well-up for the tie, which sets us up for an intriguing and hopefully entertaining spectacle!
