High-flying Burnley continue their promotion push with a victory against a gutsy Halifax FC Women under the lights.
By Alison Bamforth
Halifax FC Women found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 score line after their first away fixture in the FA Women’s National League this season, coming up against a very strong Burnley team in an evening kick off under the lights at The County Ground.
It was The Eagles who started brightest, with the first attack of the game coming from Drew Greene, whose twisting, turning run beat several Burnley defenders before the shot was deflected behind with 2 minutes played.
After a fairly evenly matched first 10 minutes, a couple of good Burnley chances then came in quick succession; first a shot that fizzed across the face of goal deflected out of danger by captain Shauna Legge, then Halifax ‘keeper Becky Flaherty was called into action to make the first of many excellent saves of the evening; this one a diving save to her right to deny the Clarets.
With quarter of an hour gone, Halifax were on the front foot again with two promising attacking moves. The first was created by Georgia Stevens who controlled the ball neatly in midfield and tried to find Lucy Sowerby, but the pass was just behind the striker. Just two minutes later it was Monique Watson with a dangerous solo run from midfield, but the resulting shot was safely gathered by the Burnley keeper. Drew Greene also found space to drive forward again, but the Burnley defence stood firm.
As the first half progressed however, it was the Clarets who found a foothold in the game. The Halifax defence held strong under increasing pressure until the 37th minute, when Burnley’s Aimee Kelly found time to control the ball just outside the area before blasting a shot into the Halifax net to make it 1-0 to the home side.

The second half started much as the first had ended, with Burnley pressure rewarded after just 2 minutes with Aimee Kelly getting her second goal of the evening after her shot took a slight deflection off a defender before nestling in the back of the Halifax net; 2-0 Burnley.
There were fewer chances for Halifax as the second half progressed, with wave after wave of Burnley attackers pushing forward, however some outstanding and gutsy defending from the entire Halifax team, and the back line especially, prevented Burnley from extending their lead further.
As the match entered its last 10 minutes, Halifax rallied, pressing hard and creating their best chance of the second half with a free-kick just inside the attacking half after Georgia Stevens was fouled, however Katie Ramsden’s curling delivery into the box was cleared away by the Burnley defence.
At the final whistle, Burnley’s strong start to the season continued as they made it 6 wins from 7 league games and extended their lead at the top of the table. However, Halifax will take positives from the game with impressive performances all over the pitch despite the result.

Manager Rob Mitchell spoke after the game:
“We knew it was going to be difficult. We dug in, I thought we defended tremendously well. I felt the team morale and spirit was high. The players put an absolute shift in and gave everything they’ve got. We gave a very good side a good run for their money.”
Next up: The Eagles get a well-earned break with no match this weekend, but are back in action on Sunday 22nd October at 2pm as they take on Nottingham Forest at Liversedge FC, Clayborn Ground, Quaker Lane, Liversedge, WF15 8DF.
