Match Report: West Bromwich Albion 1 - 0 Halifax FC Women

Halifax FC Women were narrowly beaten by West Brom on Sunday, losing 1-0 with an early goal from Delphi Cole which gave the home side the three points, extending their unbeaten run in the league.

The game started with both teams pushing on early, trying to find that important early goal to put them ahead.

The early goal came for West Brom, when in the 10th minute of the game, Olivia Rabjohn squared the ball across the face of goal to find Delphi Cole who finished excellently into the bottom left hand corner on the half volley.

The goal proved to be an important one as both teams struggled to find their way through either of the defensive walls for the remainder of the second half. A chance was created through Halifax’s high press as a misplaced pass was latched onto by Whitham, but she couldn’t quite find the back of the net.

A huge chance for West Brom on the cusp of half time was scrambled away from the line, with impeccable reactions initially from Becky Flaherty to keep them in the game.

Halifax started the second half positively, with incisive passing and more control with the ball.

Despite the revitalised Halifax in the second half, West Brom still had chances of their own, with Cole and Mahmood forcing Flaherty into action.

The Eagles held their line against the West Brom attackers with plenty of success, but they struggled to find an opening going forward. Halifax continued to press the ball consistently, winning the ball on some occasions.

Georgia Stevens managed to break through into the West Brom box, but her low driven shot was saved by the Albion keeper.

Despite the huge effort from the Halifax players, the nature of the game made it difficult to find that equalising goal, West Brom’s defence could not be broken on the day.

Manager Rob Mitchell gave his thoughts on the game:

“We’re disappointed to lose the game, but the players have given it everything, they worked really hard.”

“Credit to West Brom, I think they were really good today, organisation and structure and the way they moved the ball around.”
